It started in 2004 when I went to a friend’s thirtieth birthday celebration. It was breakfast at her mother’s house in Pimville, which is one of the townships in Soweto. Soweto is South Africa’s (actually Africa’s) biggest township, very rich in history. A number of important figures in our country come from Soweto. Pimville happens to be one of the more affluent and beautiful sections in the area. I must say though that in the last ten years that I’ve lived in Johannesburg I hadn’t really spent much time in Soweto, partly out of fear of getting mugged; raped; hijacked or whatever other stereotypical mishaps that us ‘out-of-towners’ believe about the township. But nothing was going to stop me from spending time with my friend on this special occasion.
